This panel looks at how audiences could take part in stories today from live cinema, immersive theatre to children to horror, what technologies are available today for audiences to take part (from looking at the audience’s facial expressions, heart rate to tablets) and what opportunities that brings for content producers to deliver new types of entertainment. Exploring Storytelling in the Digital Age
Monday, March 16, 11:00AM – 12:00PM
Andrew Cochrane and other creatives at Guillermo del Toro’s imaginarium, Mirada, are working to apply the craft of storytelling across numerous digital mediums. Emerging technologies are changing the way that stories are created, told, and enjoyed; as a result, they have been creating installations, web experiences, mobile/tablet apps, and content for virtual and augmented reality.
This session will walk through the areas that are being explored, with the goal of showcasing the potential in each. It will demonstrate the exciting future of storytelling, using case studies of some projects, such as IBM Think, ro.me and MirrorWorld, as well as works that exemplify creative ways to tell interactive and immersive stories. This will be an examination of how innovative narrative structures can take advantage of new technical abilities.
Telling engaging stories is an ancient skill, but it is rapidly evolving, and this session will show the ways that creatives can get in on the action.

Hyper-Reality TV and Online Video Are a Perfect Fit
Saturday, March 14, 9:30AM – 11:30AM
In an age where people are tired of overly-produced “reality” television, online video is an unfiltered, unscripted lens through which we view the world. Video today is a key tool for self-expression and an opportunity to tell more authentic stories. There is no better example than Connected — the critically acclaimed, international TV hit, Connected is an innovative docu-drama series capturing American life through the eyes of extraordinary New Yorkers, a groundbreaking format merging the documentary, drama and reality genres. The stories, filmed and told by the characters themselves change the nature of storytelling. What does this mean for content creators? In this dual presentation, award-winning filmmaker Morgan Spurlock and Dermot McCormack, President of AOL Video & Studios, will discuss how content creators can capture the unfiltered stories of everyday life and the emergence of online platforms. Connected is produced by AOL Studios and will debut on AOL March 31th.

Storytelling with the New Screens
Sunday, March 15, 9:30AM – 10:30AM
How will 3D printers, virtual reality, augmented reality, smart objects and smart cities reinvent the future of storytelling? USC’s Annenberg Innovation Lab (AIL) believes the media and entertainment industry is seeing its greatest period of upheaval since Edison invented the Kinetoscope – and the AIL’s Edison Project is finding the opportunities amidst the disruption. AIL technical director + research fellow Geoffrey Long, research associate Francesca Marie Smith and research affiliate Alisa Katz will share the AIL’s findings from a number of the lab’s transmedia storytelling experiments and prototypes (including a combination of 3d printing and augmented reality, a “smart home” entertainment experience built in the Oculus Rift, an “asymmetric multiplayer movie-watching experience” in Google Glass, and a tangible media prototype connecting a smart designer toy to a data-driven iPad storybook) and where the AIL believes the media and entertainment industry is heading next!
